English 210: Intermediate Composition

Final Evaluation

1.  Final Portfolio Grade (70%, average of three separate paper grades)

A Paper is purposeful, engaging, clear, well-organized, and polished.
AB Paper almost achieves A status, but falls short in one major area (such as weak conclusion, lack of topic sentences or transitions, consistent sentence-level problems, etc.).
B Paper is well written, but falls short in several areas (often a lack of development and clarity).
BC Paper has potential but is still in "draft" stage (usually lacking in purpose, thesis, organization, or focus)
C Paper is incomplete, lacking in purpose, or falls short in most of the above areas.

2.  Group Workshop Grade (15%)

A Group is helping members to substantially revise their papers on levels of organization and analysis by asking serious and thought-provoking questions.  Does not rely on the instructor.  Full and equal participation of all members.
AB Group works well together but still has trouble working on in-depth critique and revision.  May also have an unequal balance of participation.
B Group gets work done, but falls short in terms of serious critique and substantial revisions.  Serious imbalance in terms of participation and leadership.  Relies on instructor's prompts to work effectively.
BC Group is having problems getting work done because of personality conflicts, not having work ready for class, lack of interest, etc.

3.  Individual Grade (15%)

A Outstanding in all aspects of participation:  full attendance, full preparation of new and revised work, assignments completed on time, active participation in group and class discussions, insightful and constructive feedback in group, active engagement in class.
AB Similar to A, but falls short in one of the above categories.
B Average fulfillment of individual responsibilities.  Does work on time and participates adequately.
BC Attends class but doesn't participate very often.  Written work sometimes late or incomplete.
CDF Your grade will fall below a BC for the following problems:  not prepared for class, appears bored or detached from class discussion, fails to respect other members of the class, has problems with tardiness or attendance.
