As the coordinator of the Teaching with Writing (TWW) program, I aim to support teaching (in all its myriad modes) with/through/about writing (in all its myriad manifestations).
That support comes by way of one-to-one consultations with University instructors, customized group training and facilitation, and an engaging and interactive series of TWW events each semester. In this work, I most enjoy the intellectual stimulation and pedagogical challenges of interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary conversations about writing as a medium, tool, artifact, and cultural component of postsecondary teaching and learning.
My training as both a scientist (B.S. Chemistry) and a cultural studies scholar (Ph.D. English)—together with my work as a translator and in community-based democratic education projects—represents the diversity of my interests and my resistance of disciplinary strictures. My research areas include writing with Web 2.0 technologies, Hmong cultural production, refugee literacy practices, and diaspora studies. My teaching philosophy is grounded on the principle of engagement, and my teaching experience ranges from general chemistry to citizenship education and from American literature to Hmong language. I am committed to engaged pedagogy (i.e. service learning), learning circle pedagogy, and the mission of land grant education.
I am, together with my wife Christa, a parent to three young boys, Jude, Emmett, and Miles.
